Itinerary
Day 1: Cusco – Aguas Calientes
It is around 6:30 am that we pick you up from your hotel to head northeast of Cusco to discover the Sacred Valley. The tour begins with a visit to the charming village of Chinchero, where a strong textile tradition continues. Its colonial-style church, which is currently under restoration, contains wonderful treasures. We will visit a community textile production center, the opportunity to learn more about local traditions. After a leisurely visit to the site of Chinchero, we set off to discover the Maras salt flat, on the valley side, with more than 3,500 salt tanks exploited since Inca times. Even today, families live off the work of this product, although they now face competition from sea salt or industrially exploited salt flats. Then we will arrive at the extraordinary circuses of Moray, which feature an ingenious system of amphitheater terraces. The town has picturesque colonial-style rural houses and offers spectacular views of the Cordillera.
After a lunch stop in Urubamba, we depart for Ollantaytambo, the site of the many clashes of 1537 between the forces of the Inca chief Manco and the Spanish expedition led by Francisco Pizarro. An ancient fortress made of stones worked with admirable skill, the construction, on the side of the mountain, is surrounded by several terraces, five overlooking the ravine and six overlooking the valley.
In the late afternoon, your train awaits you in Ollantaytmabo, to arrive in Aguas Calientes, the last town at the foot of Machu Picchu. Dinner and overnight in Aguas Calientes.
Day 2: Aguas Calientes – Machu Picchu – Cusco
The next morning, around 5:30 am, we will take one of the first tour buses to Machu Picchu to enjoy the unforgettable discovery of the site at sunrise. It is with your guide and for 3 hours that you will discover the treasures of Machu Picchu. Among all the wonders are the Main Square, the Circular Tower, the Sacred Sundial, the Royal Apartments, and the Temple of the Three Windows, among others. So many opportunities to learn more about the Inca way of life, their beliefs, their cults and their religious ceremonies.
The discovery of Machu Picchu is subject to visiting circuits, designed by the Ministry of Culture, which visitors must scrupulously respect. When booking, we prefer the 2 tours that offer the opportunity to discover Machu Picchu as a whole.
To get to Aguas Calientes, there are shuttle buses that leave every 15 minutes.
In the afternoon, you will take the train to the town of Ollantaytambo. The journey takes 1 hour and 45 minutes. You must be at the station 30 minutes before the train’s departure. Then, the drive from Ollantaytambo to Cusco takes you in one of our vehicles to your hotel location.
If you opt for the ascent to Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu de Montana (optional visit), here are some important recommendations:
- Tickets for these climbs must be purchased in advance, at the time of booking the tour (please note that the number of places is limited).
- To climb them, you have to pay an extra $16 and book the entrance to the site at the same time you pay for your entire reservation.
- The climb to Huayna Picchu is very steep, people who suffer from vertigo and prone to discomfort should, of course, avoid this route.
- If you choose to climb Machu Picchu Mountain, it takes 1h30 to climb. Please note that Machu Picchu Mountain is higher than Huayna Picchu
- Finally, when opting for these climbs, the Ministry of Culture assigns you a short tour to Machu Picchu, which only crosses the site, which does not allow you to make a full visit of the site.
