Itinerary

Day 1: Cusco – Chinchero – Maras – Moray – Ollantaytambo – Cusco

We depart by private vehicle to discover the Sacred Valley of the Incas, northeast of Cusco. Archaeological discoveries show that the site, given its geographical and climatic qualities, was highly prized by the Incas.

The tour begins with a visit to the charming village of Chinchero, where a strong textile tradition continues. Its colonial-style church hides wonderful treasures. We will visit a community textile production center, an opportunity to learn more about local traditions.

After a leisurely visit to the Chinchero site, we head to the extraordinary Moray Circuses, which feature an ingenious amphitheater-like terrace system. The town has picturesque colonial-style rural houses and offers spectacular views of the Cordillera. Next, head to the Maras salt flats on the valley side, which have more than 3,500 tubs of salt that have been mined since Inca times. Even today, families live off the work of this product, although they now face competition from sea salt or industrially exploited salt flats.

After a stop in Urubamba for lunch, we arrive at Ollantaytambo, the site of the many clashes of 1537 between the forces of the Inca chief Manco and the Spanish expedition led by Francisco Pizarro. An ancient fortress made of stones worked with admirable skill, the construction, on the side of the mountain, is surrounded by several terraces, five overlooking the ravine and six overlooking the valley.
In the late afternoon, we arrive in Cusco.

NB: It is also possible, upon request and in advance, to do the tour in reverse, starting from Ollantaytambo and ending in Cusco.
